About the Job
We are looking for a licensed Structural Engineer (PE or SE) with at least 5-10 years of experience to join our growing team. This is a rare chance to work side-by-side with our founding partners on high-profile transportation projects and to take your skills to the next level.
You will be involved in every part of our work, from project scoping and structural analysis to final design and plan delivery for bridges, retaining walls, culverts, and other structures. You will collaborate with other disciplines like roadway, geotechnical, hydraulics, and construction to deliver projects that make a real difference for communities. What You’ll Do
- Inspect existing structures, perform condition assessments, and complete load ratings.
- Prepare detailed condition reports, develop repair options, and estimate construction costs.
- Plan and lay out new structures in coordination with roadway and railway improvements.
- Develop bridge type studies and propose cost effective and durable structural solutions.
- Design all types of structures, including complex bridges, using RS & PS concrete, steel, and timber.
- Conduct structural analysis and design calculations using a variety of analysis software.
- Perform design calculations and checks following AASHTO, AREMA, IDOT BM and other codes.
- Guide entry level and junior engineers on analysis, design and plan production at a high standard.
- Develop and QC construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates using Microstation & Bluebeam.
- Experience with Bentley 3D (OpenBridge) modeling is a plus, as we have upcoming projects involving it.
- Provide support during construction, including shop drawing review, RFI responses and site visits.
- Help project managers with scoping, budgeting, scheduling, and quality checks for deliverables.
- Coordinate closely with roadway, hydraulics, and geotechnical teams to ensure seamless designs.
What We’re Looking For
- Based in the Chicago area or willing to relocate.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a structural focus. A master’s degree is a plus.
- PE and/or SE license in Illinois is highly preferred.
- At least 5-10 years of structural design experience, ideally with IDOT or Illinois Tollway projects.
- Previous experience with AASHTO, AREMA, and other relevant bridge design codes.
- Skilled in structural analysis and design software. Ability to perform hand calcs to check results.
- Proficiency with Microstation CAD. Experience with Bentley 3D modeling is a bonus.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to make quick and confident decisions.
- Ability to guide and mentor junior engineers and keep projects organized within scope/schedule.
- Highly organized and has the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.

In this role, you will be a part of the Infrastructure – Transportation business practice in the US Central Sector, based in Chicago. The selected candidate will work under the senior engineers with a focus on transportation/structural related planning and design projects. Project types will be diverse and include, but not be limited to, new structures, rehabilitation of existing structures, and inspections and load rating of existing structures including bridges, culverts, retaining walls and transit/railway facilities. The projects will involve a wide variety of structure types, foundations and materials.

- BS in Civil/Structural Engineering and EIT certification required.

EXP’s Infrastructure & Transportation Practice provides comprehensive planning, design and construction engineering services for all types of roadway, bridge, water resource, rail, transit and aviation projects. We are currently looking to grow and enhance our project management capabilities and are seeking a highly motivated and dynamic Project Manager for our Chicago office. The ideal candidate will work directly under the supervision of the Practice Manager and focus on delivering transportation projects for a wide variety of clients within Illinois.

- Manage a wide variety and complexity of infrastructure related projects.
- Maintain project schedules and manage project financials including profit/loss responsibility and targeted direct margin.

- 12+ years of progressively responsible relevant experience including at least 5+ years of successful project management experience.
- Licensed PE in the State of Illinois. The ability to obtain licensure in other states is desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and lead diverse project teams with a strong track record of project delivery from both a technical and financial perspective.
- Knowledge of work related to delivering transportation projects primarily for highway and bridge related clients such as IDOT, Tollway, CDOT and local agencies required, related experience to other agencies and clients in rail, transit and aviation is also desirable.
- Experience delivering both planning and design related projects.
- Knowledge in CADD delivery issues and workflows and proficient in MS Office software.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to direct and supervise staff engineers and technicians.

In this role, you will be a part of a Building Structures focusedteam and reporting to the Director of Building Structures. The location for the selected candidate is flexible but ideal location could include but are not limited to Chicago, St. Louis, Bedminster, NJ or Southfield MI office.
The Building Structures team executes projects throughout the United States and several US Territories. In addition, opportunities to support non-US based teams within EXP should be expected.
The successful candidate will be able to work as with a diverse team in-house team of professionals and subconsultants throughout the country in all disciplines. You will work and collaborate with experienced members of the Building Structures team for mentoring and career development.
The chosen candidate should expect engagement in a variety of project types. Major market sectors include but are not limited to mission critical buildings, aviation, light passenger rail facilities and commercial building design.
What a day at EXP has in store for you
- Generally, take direction from senior engineers and project leads. Expect autonomy and independence to be commensurate with experience.
- Calculations, sketches, drawing production, specifications, multi-discipline coordination should be expected on a regular basis.
- Conducting observations of and evaluating existing conditions in both the field and via existing historical drawings are commonplace.
- Expect to work on multiple projects concurrently that require coordination of work between multiple EXP offices, as well as outside consultants.
- Occasional short-term travel to project sites. Usually, a single night or two at a time.

What your experience looks like
- Targeted experience level is 0-3 years with a focus on building design.
- Possess a solid understanding of various structural analysis software such as RAM, RISA, ETABS.
- Possess strong Revit skills in both modeling and sheet creation at a minimum. Additional skills on items such as family creation, knowledge of parameter use, and templates is a plus.
- Working towards EIT
- Master’s degree in Structural Engineering is preferred. A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering w/ an emphasis on structures and/or relevant advanced coursework is considered a minimum requirement.
- Hold excellent written and verbal communication skills. Possess the ability to write persuasively and communicate technical subject matter in a concise and comprehendible manner to a less technical audience.

- Provides custom fixture design and / or selection including hand-drawn sketches.
- Provides conceptual hand-drawn sketches for early design phase submittals.
- Presents conceptual design to client and design team along with Associate Lighting Designer.
- Ability to represent the discipline in creative meetings with design team and clients.
- Ability to create discipline work plan to meet project scope within discipline budget.
- Ability to direct and mentor junior Lighting Designer staff.
- Ability to coordinate with other disciplines.
- Ability to direct programming staff during commissioning to achieve creative intent.
- Ability to offer creative problem solving to challenging issues.
- Ability to travel nationally and internationally as required by project.
What your experience looks like
- 4-6 years of professional experience
- BA, BFA, BAE or MFA with an emphasis in Lighting Design.
- Associate IALD membership preferred.
- REVIT MEP and Auto CAD Proficiency required.
The salary range for this role is $77,000 - $88,000 ($37.00 per hour - $42.00 per hour). Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience, certifications, and specific work location. This may be different in other locations due to differences in the cost of labor. 10-4 Engineering PLLC is seeking a Co-op or Internship Structural Engineer. 10-4 is a Chicago-based engineering firm recently founded by three licensed structural engineers: Hemal Patel, Gary Powell and Vinod Patel. Hemal, Gary and Vinod have a combined 100 years of experience in bridge inspections and bridge design engineering through delivering large and complex infrastructure projects, such as highway corridors, interchanges, public-transit networks, and river crossings. Many of their projects have been award-winning designs recognized by the clients and the industry.

You will be mentored by three highly experienced engineers with the goal of building a strong foundation in structural engineering and project execution.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assist in bridge, retaining wall, and culvert inspections, and collect and analyze data from reports, drawings, and photographs to assess structural condition and load-carrying capacity of existing structures.
- Prepare portions of Bridge Condition Reports to document existing conditions, bridge repairs, rehabilitation, or reconstruction alternatives and recommendations for proposed bridge construction scope.
- Work with highly experienced and licensed structural engineers on the design of highway and railroad bridges, retaining walls, and culverts using Design Manuals and Specifications such as IDOT Bridge Design Manual, Tollway Structure Design Manual, AASHTO, and AREMA bridge design specifications.
- Perform basic structural analysis and design calculations using structural engineering software under supervision.
- Use MicroStation CAD software to assist with design sketches and construction drawings.
- Perform quantity calculations and assist in the preparation of cost estimates and construction schedules.
- Coordinate with other transportation disciplines (roadway, hydraulics, and geotechnical) on structure layouts and details.
- Visit active construction sites to observe construction and document progress.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Must be pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in structural engineering (Senior year or MS candidate preferred).
- Familiarity with structural engineering software (3+ years’ academic or project experience preferred).
- Proficient with Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Familiarity with MicroStation and/or AutoCAD.
- Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills to develop productive working relationships with other team members.
- Requires organization and time-management skills to perform tasks on multiple projects at a given time.
- An attitude and commitment to being an active, engaged member of this small startup firm.
